Abusive relationships don’t look abusive much of the time, even to the people involved. That’s what makes them confusing. That’s a large part of why people stay in them.

You fall in love with each other and it looks and feels every bit like being in love with a non-abuser. They don’t usually hurt you at first, so you get used to thinking of them as someone you can trust. And you treat each other with very real kindness. Then… they’re not kind one day. But it goes away soon. Maybe they even promise it’ll never happen again, and you believe them. But it does happen. More and more.

But the thing is, even as things get progressively more abusive, there are usually still periods of love, kindness and warmth between you. I’ve had more than one person tell me they were afraid no one would believe them or that the abuse wasn’t real because if it were observed from the outside, it would look like it wasn’t abusive.

But the thing is, that does look abusive, because that’s how abuse looks. Abusive people aren’t usually construction workers stumbling home drunk and beating their wives night after night without affection or remorse. They can be gentle pet store owners who love to cook, firemen who bring home flowers or stay-at-home parents who take great care of the kids. 

Abuse is not negated by an apology and abusive behavior is not negated by times of kindness.
